South Carolina Gamecocks at UConn Huskies women's basketball: Gamecocks fall to Huskies

Carolina blown out in Storrs.

David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports

South Carolina's winning streak and time atop the rankings is over. The Gamecocks fell at UConn by a score of 87-62. As the score suggests, UConn dominated this game. Carolina kept the game from getting completely out of hand in the second half, but they played nowhere near well enough down the stretch to make up for the huge hold they were in at halftime. Ultimately, Carolina's inability to defend UConn on the perimeter in the first half did the Gamecocks in. The Huskies were an unbelievable 8-11 from downtown on the whole this evening. UConn sharpshooter Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis shot an astounding 5-6 from beyond the arc.

This loss hurts, but as I said in my preview, Carolina just needs to put the loss behind it and finish the year strong. If the Gamecocks were ever going to beat UConn this season, it was unlikely to happen in Storrs, where the Huskies program is nearly untouchable. If Carolina plays well down the stretch, wraps up a number-one seed, and plays its way into a rematch against UConn, things may go differently on a neutral court.
