The Gamecocks swept their opening weekend of SEC play, capping off the series against the Wildcats with a dramatic walk-off homer to extend their winning streak to ten games. South Carolina is now unanimously ranked 6th in the country by the major college baseball polls and is 17-3 on the season.
South Carolina leads the overall series with Winthrop 15-6. Despite playing yearly in the early 90s, Winthrop and Carolina have seldom met in the two decades since then. The two teams have split their last ten meetings, and only one of those games (a 14-6 USC victory in 2010) took place after 2000.
The Winthrop Eagles are 13-5 overall this year. Winthrop's only series loss is to Toledo and their only midweek loss is to USC Upstate. The Eagles beat Clemson at the beginning of March in the first of Clemson's six losses since the rivalry series. Winthrop enters tonight's game coming off of a win in Sunday's rubber game to take the series against Kennesaw State.
