Joshua S. Kelly-USA TODAY Sports

Do you have a knack for writing, research, and South Carolina athletics? Do you want to learn more about digital publishing and journalism? If so, we want to talk to you. GABA is looking for at least one more football writer, as well as potentially other contributors who fill niches that we're not currently hitting.

Duties: We are looking to additional writers to the team, particularly to help with our original football coverage. Our recruiting writers will need to be comfortable writing about team news in a fast-paced setting, using social media to aggregate news, and have flexible availability (ideally some nights and weekends) to help assist other writers, and potentially non-football breaking news. Social media mastery and flexible schedules would also be helpful for other subject matter experts.

We'd also love to bring along someone with Photoshop skills to compliment our already excellent Jorge.

Background and qualifications: This is an entry-level position in sports media. Candidates with experience producing sports news content or sports news columns are preferred in either an intern, academic or professional capacity. A journalism or English degree (or degree in-progress) is preferred but not required. Demonstrated knowledge of college athletics is also a major plus.

Our ideal candidate:

  • Has strong knowledge about South Carolina, both current and historical.
  • Possesses excellent writing skills, and does not require editing or spell check before publishing.
  • Has a nose for news, both in knowing what is important and identifying where to find it.
  • Is able to write in line with and adhere to our best practices.
  • Is able to write and publish quickly while remaining accurate.
  • Is a self-starter who can work with minimal direction.
  • Possesses solid communication skills.
  • Is comfortable working in a virtual environment.

Hours: Schedules will vary based on the athletic calendar, need, and availability. Ideally, you'll contribute at least twice a week on average. Those articles may be original content, news roundups, practice summaries, or they may be other original ideas for pieces or series you have.

We are looking for writers that can begin immediately.

Compensation: This position will be eligible for a monthly stipend. The size of that stipend will vary depending on experience, quality and commitment, but it bares mentioning that if money is your 100% biggest motivation, this probably isn't the best fit for you. If you would like to get academic credit for this arrangement, we will fill out all paperwork needed that you provide.

Some alumni of Garnet and Black Attack (as well as other SB Nation team sites) have turned their work on the site into professional employment opportunities (in some cases full time) with major newspapers and prominent new media outlets while others have parlayed their experience into full-time social media and web management positions.  Most recently, Connor Tapp left directly from Garnet and Black Attack to begin writing for in a full-time position.  Prior to that, he also worked part-time for the main SB Nation site.

How to Apply: Candidates should send writing samples to  Please include in your e-mail a brief description of how you think you would fit in at GABA, the types of articles you would want to write, and any other information you think relevant.
