South Carolina Gamecocks Left Tackle Brandon Shell Taken by New York Jets in 5th Round

The former Gamecock left tackle has a home in New York

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

With the 158th overall pick, Brandon Shell was taken by the New York Jets in the 5th round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Shell spent the first 3 years as a South Carolina Gamecock at right tackle before moving to the blindside in his senior season. Standing 6'5 and 324 pounds, Shell has been an anchor on Shawn Elliott's unit the past 4 years.

Shell came to South Carolina as a highly touted prospect. A 4 star recruit, according to ESPN, he also has the NFL bloodlines as his uncle Art Shell is in the NFL Hall of Fame.

Despite his senior season being overshadowed by the retirement of Steve Spurrier and a 3-9 finish, Shell often was one of the more reliable players on last year's Gamecock football team.

What They're Saying (From

Shell doesn’t have the feet to play left tackle and doesn'’t bend well enough to generate consistent leverage and push as a guard inside. With that said, he has size and length and a four-year starting history in a challenging conference. Add everything up, and Shell looks to be a third day selection as a right tackle only. He may be an eventual starter, but is better suited as a backup

Good luck to Brandon as he begins his NFL journey.
