South Carolina football recruiting: AJ Terrell to announce Friday

A big cornerback target knows where he’s headed.

A.J. Terrell

There’s not a lot to report in the way of offers for the Gamecocks, but many current recruits are looking to either pare their list down, set up official visits, or decide altogether. AJ Terrell is in that latter group. Terrell, who has South Carolina, Florida and Clemson in his top three, will announce his college decision on Friday on Twitter. Terrell was up at Clemson the other week and is currently showing as a strong lean for the Tigers. It wouldn’t surprise us given the team’s standing with Jamyest Willliams, who is set to pledge on August 27.

Speaking of Williams, he was on a visit to Georgia this past weekend. It might be safe to call this a two-horse race between them and the Gamecocks at this point as Ohio State isn’t thought to be a serious factor.

DL visitor enjoys trip

There was a defensive line visitor in the house for the Gamecocks, and it was from way up in the Northeast: Brooklyn’s Romello Martin. Martin had some very good things to say about his trip.

“I learned everything about the campus,” Martin said. “Everything was amazing. I liked what I saw, the locker room, the indoor field, the stadium, the weight room.”

...

“I put the visit right up there with Florida,” he said. “Those are the two best visits I’ve had.”

While the Northeast has produced some Gamecocks in recent years (Philadelphia products David Williams and Brandon McIlwain come to mind), it’s been a good while since a high schooler from New York has played for the program. Maybe this starts a little pipeline from NYC to the South? We’ll see. (Drop us a line in the comments if you know any New York City players that have played for the Gamecocks. New Jersey doesn’t count in this case, but we’ll accept Long Island, though.)
