The #2 dual threat quarterback in the country and a top six player in his class in the state of Pennsylvania, McIlwain was one of the most coveted signal callers in the 2016 cycle. He garnered offers from 23 programs - including Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Michigan State, Nebraska, Penn State, Tennessee and Wisconsin - but with the race centered on the Gamecocks and Nittany Lions, the Gamecocks ended up winning out as they grabbed a commitment on New Years’ Eve 2014.
McIlwain is firmly in the quarterback race alongside Perry Orth. While Will Muschamp isn’t tipping his hand in regards to who a possible leader is, we expect that McIlwain will remain in the hunt until the very end. Will that mean he starts on September 1? Maybe not. But I’d hedge my bets on seeing #11 at QB at some point during the season - whenever that is.
