While the Gamecocks football team will be hosting several five-star recruits today, the Gamecocks basketball team will have a fairly big recruit of their own in the house. Oak Hill Academy shooting guard Devontae Shuler, considered a four-star player and a top 25 SG by 247Sports, is in Columbia for an official visit. The Columbia native made his way into town yesterday to meet with Frank Martin, the staff, and several players. The Gamecocks are predicted to be a big favorite to bring the hometown product back to play his college ball.
A few days ago, Shuler unveiled his Top 5, and the Gamecocks were in the mix as expected. Despite missing out on Seventh Woods, Frank Martin has had a good run of success in funneling in-state talent to Columbia (P.J. Dozier, Sindarius Thornwell, and for what it’s worth, Marcus Stroman), and adding Shuler to the fold would be another win for him.

Shuler isn’t the only player taking an official this weekend for the basketball team. Greenvile (S.C.) small forward Nicolas Claxton, the #3 player in the state among current seniors, made the trip from the Upstate. While the Gamecocks are on his list, Claxton, a Georgia legacy (his father played there in the early to mid-90s), is showing as a heavy Dawgs lean at this time. Baylor, UGA, FSU, Maryland and NC State join the Gamecocks in his top six.
Dawn Staley will have a big visitor of her own on campus this weekend as well. Jade Williams, ranked as a five-star recruit and the #13 player in the country by ESPNw, is reportedly in town taking an official visit. Williams, a 6’4” forward ranked as the #4 player at her position, played on the Under-16 national team last year.
