The #5 South Carolina Gamecocks picked up their third road win in SEC play with a 84-61 win over the LSU Tigers. With A’ja Wilson out, Alaina Coates led the Gamecocks with yet another double-double. Her first half performance, along with Allisha Gray and Bianca Cuevas-Moore, gave the Gamecocks a double digit lead at halftime. Carolina would stay ahead by double figures for rest of the game to win at LSU.
LSU came out strong and took an early lead. But the Gamecock defense finished the first quarter on a 18-7 run. They turned seven LSU turnovers into nine points to take a 27-18 lead at the end of the period.
The Gamecocks went into the half with a 49-36 lead. Carolina used the free throw line to build their double digit lead, shooting 18-23. Coates led the way with 18 first half points and eight from the charity stripe. Cuevas-Moore had 12 at the break and Gray had 10 as the two combined to shoot 7-12 in the first half.
It was more of the same from the three in the second half as Carolina stretched the lead. Gray was the leading scorer after the break with 11 points, shooting a perfect 4-4 from the floor and hitting both of her free throws. She finished 21. Coates finished with a team-high 24 points and 11 rebounds. Cuevas-Moore finished with 17 points.
LSU had some success offensively, scoring 36 points in the first half. They were unable to keep up with their pace though, scoring only 25 in the second half. Chloe Jackson led the way for the Lady Tigers with 24 points. LSU’s leading scorer on the season, Raigyne Moncrief, had a frustrating afternoon. She finished with 13 points on 5-16 shooting.
Next up for the Gamecocks is a home game on Thursday night against Ole Miss at 7 p.m.
