The South Carolina Gamecocks dropped their opener in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Classic, but they’re still alive in the tournament’s consolation bracket. There wasn’t much the Gamecocks did well against Illinois State in their 69-65 setback, but where they really struggled was shooting: 30% from the floor, 28% from 3-point land, and 67% from the foul line. South Carolina also accumulated 32 fouls and saw two of its starters (Maik Kotsar and Chris Silva) foul out, which hampered its lineups and left inexperienced players on the floor for long stretches. All around, it was just one of those horrible, no good, very bad days.

What to watch for

UTEP, which crushed Louisiana College 100-50 in its opener, lost 58-56 to Boise State in the final seconds on a go-ahead 3-point play. Guard Keith Frazier led all scorers with 22 points and also collected 10 rebounds, while center Matt Willms added 11 points. Like the Gamecocks, UTEP struggled on the offensive end against the Broncos, shooting 34% from the field and 22% from three. The Miners were picked to finish fifth out of 14 teams in Conference-USA, and also placed guard Omega Harris on the preseason all-conference team.
