Gamecocks land back in Outback Bowl against Michigan

Yep, we’re doing this again.

According to college football bowl guru Brett McMurphy, the South Carolina Gamecocks will once again meet the Michigan Wolverines in the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Fla.

The teams last played in 2013, with South Carolina capturing an exciting 33-28 win in a back-and-forth contest that attained instant classic status when The Hit happened.

My knee-jerk, gut reaction: Meh. It’s hard for me to get excited about a repeat matchup, even if it was four years ago. Bowl games are a chance to see some variety, but it feels like the Gamecocks are in a bit of a rut in that regard and I’m frankly just kind of bored by Big Ten opponents.

On the bright side, the Outback Bowl is fairly prestigious as far as mid-tier bowls go — it’s played in a destination city and also on New Year’s Day. Throw in the Jim Harbaugh factor and this game could end up being pretty high profile. Not a bad reward for an 8-4 season.
