The Gamecocks are still undefeated on the diamond in 2017 after beating UNCG in game two of their series on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans threatened early, getting two batters on with one out inn the first, but they weren’t able to capitalize. Both teams’ offenses were pretty quiet otherwise until the third inning, when South Carolina got on the board thanks to Justin Row, who tallied his first RBI of the season to make it 1-0.

The Gamecocks tacked on a few more runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Jacob Olson and Jonah Bride knocked back-to-back single, then Danny Blair followed with a base hit of his own to bring Olson in. With two outs, Row singled as well, then Alex Destino came through with yet another base hit to bring two more runners home and make it 4-0.

South Carolina’s final run of the game was scored in the eighth inning, when Carlos Cortes recorded his first collegiate hit and RBI on a single that brought Chris Cullen across the plate.

The only UNCG run came in the ninth inning on a sac fly by Michael Goss.

In his first appearance since 2015, Wil Crowe was really sharp. He worked five innings and allowed three hits and no runs, walked one batter, and struck out seven. He also earned the win. Reed Scott pitched the remainder of the game and gave up just one hit and no runs, didn’t issue any walks, and tallied three Ks. At one point in the game, Crowe and Scott combined to retire 15 UNCG batters in a row.

With the win, South Carolina improves to 2-0, while the Spartans drop to 0-2. They’ll meet again for the final game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Adam Hill will start on the mound for the Gamecocks.
