The Gamecocks fell short of sweeping UNCG this weekend as the offense took the day off in Columbia.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first two innings, but the Spartans got on the board in the third. Unfortunately, a leadoff walk, a passed ball and a misplayed ball by South Carolina all helped UNCG get the runner on and in.
That was the only run that scored all game, as neither offense could really get anything going. The only time the Gamecocks truly threatened was in the eighth inning. LT Tolbert singled to lead off the inning, Jonah Bride laid down a perfect sac bunt to move Tolbert up, and then Hopkins walked to put two runners on with one out. That was as close as South Carolina got, though, because Danny Blair - who overall had a really good weekend - hit into a particularly ill-timed double play.
While the offense was lackluster today for the Gamecocks, the pitching was not. Adam Hill looked great on the mound, working seven innings and allowing just one hit and no runs (UNCG’s only run was unearned). He issued two walks and struck out seven batters, and at one point had retired 15 Spartans in a row. Josh Reagan pitched the eighth and ninth innings and didn’t give up any hits, runs, or walks. He also tallied three Ks. There were also some bright spots defensively, including Tolbert making a couple of nice plays.
With the loss, South Carolina drops to 2-1, while UNCG is now 1-2. The Gamecocks will be back in action on Tuesday, when they host Charlotte. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Founders Park.
