Tonight, the South Carolina Gamecocks (29-4) take on the Quinnipiac Bobcats (29-6), the 12-seed of the Stockton region. A spot in the Elite Eight is on the line for the first meeting in the two program’s history.
Carolina survived an upset bid from Arizona State in the round of 32, pulling out a 71-68 win in the final seconds. Allisha Gray went down in the final minutes with a leg injury. Fears were put to bed earlier this week though as Dawn Staley said the guard will be ready for the Bobcats. She is averaging a double-double so far
A’ja Wilson led the way for Carolina in the win with a double-double, scoring 21 and gathering 11 boards. Kaela Davis scored 20 in the win while Gray exited with 11.
The Bobcats have already pulled off two upsets so far this tournament. The MAAC champions have knocked off 5-seed Marquette and 4-seed Miami. It’s been a total team effort so far for the Connecticut school. In their upset over Marquette, they jumped out to a thirteen point halftime lead and held on to a 68-65 win. Redshirt sophomore Jen Fay led the way with 20 points. In their win over Miami, the Bobcats got a big boost from the bench in Morgan Manz. The senior forward scored 22 to lead the team. Sarah Shewan also hit double figures off the bench, with 11.
The key to the game for the Gamecocks will be getting A’ja Wilson going inside. The Bobcats lack size. At six-foot, two inches, Shewan is the tallest player to have played for the Bobcats this tournament.
The winner of the matchup will take on the winner of (3) Florida State and (2) Oregon State for a trip to the Final Four.
