Pre-Season Practice Starting

I hope everyone had a good weekend. It seems like the time is getting close to some actual college football. Pre-Season practice is starting this week. Now that all the eligible players are on campus and ready to start, what position or player are you most concerned about?

From what I've been reading the offensive and defensive lines should be in good shape. I think we all know how good the running back position seems to be in right now. The tight end and linebacker positions have some veterans and young players that will be a good mix. So, I think all those will be fine unless some injuries happen over the next 4 weeks or so.

Offensive Questions:

The most important position to how the whole season is going to be quarterback as usual. How Luke Doty progresses into his sophomore year will be vital to how many games this team can win this year. The run game should take some pressure of his shoulders, but if he cannot find open receivers then it will be another long and painful season. I think he will need to put up like 2500 yards through the air in order for the team to have a good season.

That brings us to the ultimate guessing game leading up to the season, which wide receivers can play in the SEC? There will not be a leading receiver coming back to SC for the first time in awhile. The next big name will need to emerge quickly for the offense to not be a weak point for this team. Will everyone be surprised by one of the older receivers having a break out year, possibly Joyner, O. Smith, or J. Vann? Will a recent transfer(s) make a mark to lead the team in receiving? It is anyone's guess right now. Justin Stepp will definitely be earning his paycheck as a receiver's coach this year.

Defensive Questions:

Moving to a new 4-2-5 scheme that Clayton White likes to use will be interesting to see this year. The defensive line seems to love the more attacking style they will be asked to play this year. Only having 2 linebackers on the field cuts down the worry some fans have had over the last couple of years about who the 3rd linebacker was actually going to be. But, it shines a glaring spotlight on the defensive backs that will have to adapt to playing this style.

This is the one area that South Carolina fans will be biting their nails over until kickoff of the Eastern Illinois game and maybe all season. Cam Smith is supposed be be a good corner, and he has some experience playing last year. RJ Roderick and Jaylin Dickerson are back at safety. Not sure what we are going to get out of RJ (can't cover) and Jaylin (always banged up).

There are the transfers from Kansas (Karon Prunty, FS All-American), Washington State (Tyrese Ross), Assumption College (Carlins Platel), and Georgia Southern (Davis Spaulding). There are the JC transfers Isaiah Norris and Marcellas Dial. They have experience outside of high school which will be needed this year. I know SC is planning to sign a lot of DB's in this year's class, and they will be needed.

So, we still have a month left until the season starts. What are you looking to see/hear about during pre-season camp this year? It will be interesting to hear from some of the freshman if they are requested by the media. WM wouldn't let them talk to the media while he was in Columbia, so it will be interesting how Beamer handles this.

Go Cocks!
