Redshirt freshman Chris Moody looks to add some depth at the safety position and contribute on special teams in his second year in Columbia.

Chris Moody
Redshirt Freshman Safety
6'1", 212 lbs.
McDonough, GA (Henry County)

Recruitment:
3 stars, #54 athlete in the 2012 class
Other offers: Vanderbilt, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Mississippi State, UCF, and Virginia Tech. Moody committed to the Commodores on January 22nd following an official visit to Nasvhille but flipped his commitment to South Carolina two days before National Signing Day following an official visit to Columbia.

College Career:
Moody redshirted as a true freshman in 2012.

2013 Outlook:
Moody isn't listed on the depth chart for the season opener against North Carolina, and is likely to only contribute in a special teams capacity in 2013, barring a series of injuries to the safeties currently populating the depth chart for South Carolina.

Trivia:
For whatever reason, when you do a Google search for any given Gamecock player, his South Carolina profile is the almost always the first thing that turns up, regardless of how common his name is. But when you search for "Chris Moody", he doesn't even turn up on the first page, and this DJ is the first hit.

Possible Todd Ellis play-by-play call:
"Tajh Boyd out of the gun, throws downfield - IT'S PICKED OFF! Chris Moody has it, and he WILL. NOT. BE. CAUGHT. A 46-yard interception return for a touchdown for Chris Moody. After that play, it's going to be much more difficult for Tajh Boyd to get a loan because Moody just downgraded his credit rating to B1."

Since there's nothing to be said about the real Clowney, let's check in with his alternate universe counterpart.

ALTERNATE UNIVERSE Jadeveon Clowney
Junior
6'5", 195 lbs.
Rock Hill, SC

Recruitment:
1 star, #3,275 DE in the 2011 class
Other offers: South Idaho School of Agriculture and Livestock (intramural squad); North Sheboygan School for the Blind (preferred walk-on since not blind); Kentucky

College Career:
Lightly recruited out of high school, Jadeveon walked on at the University of South Carolina in the summer of 2011. "He's a good kid," said Steve Spurrier. "Can't play a lick of football, but he's got a good heart and can fold a towel somethin' fierce. So we tossed him a jersey, let him pad up."

Added Spurrier, "Heck, I'm not sure some of the other players on the team know who Jadeveon Clowney is."

Clowney has spent most of his time on the scout team for the scout team, but briefly played in mop-up duty against UAB last season, when he appeared in a single kickoff coverage package. After the play, during which Clowney skipped down the far sideline opposite the ball carrier, he jogged over to the coaches, who offered for him to stay in. "No, thank you!" said Clowney. "Let the other fellas play. I'm tuckered!" Clowney then hustled over to a pile of discarded towels, and began to fold them.

Clowney spent the offseason as the opening shift manager at the Starbucks on Gervais Street. "I know it's not the typical summer for a college football player," said Clowney, adding foam to a double tall soy chai latte, "but I like to get my day started at 5 AM so I can make sure I catch the sunrise, and I'm getting real world leadership experience. Football won't last forever. Most NCAA athletes go pro in something other than sports!"

2013 Outlook:
Jadeveon Clowney has yet to crack the six deep, but coaches won't dismiss the idea of him playing meaningful minutes. "Hell, I guess a series of unfortunate accidents could befall literally every scholarship player and most walk-ons, paving the way for him to get his shot," said defensive line coach Deke Adams. "But more than likely, we won't see much of Ja'devin. Good folder, though."

Trivia:
Jadeveon admitted that he aced his final exam in a Functional Accounting II Maymester course despite "totally forgetting about it" until an hour before it started.

Possible Todd Ellis play-by-play call:
"Connor Shaw out of the gun, takes the snap, looks downfield. Shaw lets it go over the middle and iiiiiiiiiit's- CAUGHT! Damieeeeeeeere Byrd hauls in a 52-yard touchdown pass on a beautifully thrown post route from Connor Shaw, and even though this broadcast is brought to you by Sansbury Eye Center, I cannot believe my surgically repaired eyes. I'll tell you what, Tommy. When you see the quarterback throwing a spiral that tight in an absolute monsoon here on senior night against the Clemson Tigers, a lot of credit has to go to the towel boy, a young man whose name I'm being told is Javelin Clowntoss."

Shon Carson was a play away from potentially finishing the 2011 season as the Gamecocks' starting running back. Since then, he's had to slowly work his way back up the depth chart while battling a series of injuries.

Shon Carson
Redshirt Sophomore Running Back
5'8", 219 lbs.
Scranton, SC (Lake City HS)

Recruitment:
3 stars, #9 all-purpose back in the 2011 class
Other offers: Clemson, Miami, and North Carolina

College Career:
After arriving in Columbia in June of 2011, Carson immediately distinguished himself as ball carrier because of his breakaway speed and rapidly ascended the depth chart, eventually working his way into a role backing up Marcus Lattimore (passing Kenny Miles and Brandon Wilds along the way). Unfortunately, the spoils of that achievement were short-lived, as Carson would tear his ACL on his first carry of the Georgia game, a disappointing footnote in a thrilling 45-42 win over the Bulldogs in the second game of the season. Shon was granted a medical hardship for 2011, preserving a year of eligibility he would have otherwise lost.

Carson hurt his left wrist prior to the 2012 season and sat out every game except the 2013 Outback Bowl. Shon's decision to play in that game is notable because he would have been able to redshirt had he remained on the sideline. But the vibe coming from the coaching staff and Carson himself was that Shon doesn't have much interest in staying in Columbia for six years. He frequently laments via social media over declining a contract with the Cincinnati Reds when they drafted him out of high school in 2011. Given how he has been plagued by injury since becoming a Gamecock, it's hard to blame him for being frustrated with having forgone that payday.

2013 Outlook:
Though Mike Davis was recently named the starter for the season opener against North Carolina, the expectation is still that we'll see plenty of Brandon Wilds and Shon Carson throughout the season. Each back brings a differentiated skill set to the table, and all indications are that running backs coach Everette Sands has full confidence to send each of them out on the field in any situation.

Trivia:
Carson is one of three high school football players in South Carolina history to score 100 career touchdowns. The other two are former Gamecock running backs Marcus Lattimore and Demetris Summers.

Possible Todd Ellis play-by-play call:
"Shaw in the gun, takes the snap, hands it off to Carson. He breaks free, stiff arms the defender, jukes Jordan Jenkins out of his shoes, and cruises into the end zone for a touchdown. Touchdown Carolina! Tommy, his name is Shon Carson, but after tonight folks will be calling him Shonda Rhimes because the story of how he has fought through injury after injury to get back on the field and into the end zone against the Georgia Bulldogs is a tale fit for an uplifting mid-season finale of an hour-long ABC drama."

Let us all rally behind Darius English in his effort to unseat Darius Rucker as the most famous Darius with a degree from South Carolina.

Darius English
Redshirt Freshman Defensive End
6'6", 226 lbs.
Powder Springs, GA (McEachern)

Recruitment:
4 stars, #18 weakside defensive end in the 2012 class
Other offers: Arkansas, Auburn, Cincinnati, East Carolina, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan State, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Ole Miss, South Florida, Vanderbilt, and Wake Forest

College Career:
English played sparingly in blowout wins over ECU and UAB but injured his right wrist and ended up taking a redshirt during his first year in Columbia. Former defensive line coach Brad Lawing believed that English might have started as a true freshman were he on the roster toward the beginning of Spurrier's tenure in Columbia, but the Gamecocks' depth in the trenches gave the coaching staff the luxury of having English come down with a [wink, wink] season-ending wrist injury and a successful application for a medical hardship redshirt.

2013 Outlook:
"Spindly" is an adjective that is used frequently on this site to describe Darius English, for whom adding and maintaining weight has been a struggle from day one. Though it may seem strange to regular human beings like you and me, 226 lbs. is not very many lbs. for a young man who is 6 feet, 6 inches tall and tasked with disrupting offensive linemen who are frequently 100 lbs. heavier than that.

Of course, this isn't to say that English is without his virtues. He's a skilled pass rusher with 4 star prospect bona fides, is listed second on the depth chart behind a young man who is, among other things, COMIN', and has the inside track to return in 2014 as South Carolina's most experienced defensive end.

In the near term, expect to see English on the field to give Clowney and Chaz Sutton breathers and on third and long in Lorenzo Ward's rabbits package.

Trivia:
English was high school teammates with current Gamecocks Busta Anderson (starter at TE), Marcquis Roberts (projected starter at WLB), and Nick St. Germain, so McEachern High School was probably pretty damn good at football in 2010.

Possible Todd Ellis play-by-play call:
"Third and long, four defensive ends on the field for the Gamecocks. Murray takes the snap from the gun, and BOOM! Darius English delivers a MONSTER hit to force fourth down. I'll tell you what, folks, Darius just blasted from a disconnected light switch through the condo that they'll never finish, bounced across a Saudi satellite dish, and through Aaron Murray's brain to Carolina English."

College Career:
Shamier redshirted in 2011, and appeared in three games last season without logging a statistic.

2013 Outlook:
It was reported that the young Jeffery lacked drive and was coasting for much of his first two years on campus. But something clicked in the spring, and Shamier dropped a chunk of weight and began earning the praise of his coaches. He's since worked his way into the mix at receiver, and is likely to operate out of the X position.
2013 Outlook:
Golightly is projecting to be the starting SPUR, a position Devonte Holloman admirably filled for the past few seasons. Holloman played at about 240 pounds, so Gamecock fans will have to get used to a decidedly smaller frame manning the position.
Recruitment:
4 stars, #26 wide receiver in the 2012 class
Other offers: Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Clemson, East Carolina, Illinois, LSU, Minnesota, NC State, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest

College Career:
Smith redshirted in 2012 and, despite enrolling at Carolina in May of 2012, was not a lock to play a single down of football for the Gamecocks. Kwinton was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 14th round of the 2012 MLB Draft, and the Rangers made a strong push for the then-6'3", 175 lbs. pitcher/outfielder prospect before he ultimately decided to forego hundreds of thousands of dollars to don the garnet and black. I don't understand why anyone would make that decision, but I certainly appreciate it.

2013 Outlook:
At 6'4", 212 lbs., Smith has the build of the Rice and Jeffery types that have performed so well in Spurrier's passing attack since he arrived at Carolina in 2005 and has the offer list to indicate what his ultimate ceiling is. There are a handful of players more experienced than Smith in the 2013 wide receiver rotation, but Kwinton has the talent to break out at any moment (a la Alshon Jeffery in the 2009 Kentucky game).

Trivia:
Kwinton was born a month and four days before Kurt Cobain committed suicide, which makes me feel really old and upset about the fact that I will probably die at some point in the next several decades.

Possible Todd Ellis play-by-play call:
Shaw out of the gun, looks downfield, hits his receiver on the post route. It's Kwinton Smith, and he's going to score.
With the departures of TJ Johnson and Devonte Holloman (pictured), a nominal hybrid fills the gap. Also he's the back-up MIKE linebacker.

TJ Holloman
Redshirt Freshman
6'2", 228 lbs.
Stone Mountain, GA

Recruitment:
3 stars, #27 ILB in the 2012 class
Other offers: Illinois, Louisville, N.C. State

College Career:
Reshirted as a true freshman.

2013 Outlook:
TJ Holloman is one of four Gamecocks to hail from Stone Mountain, Ga., although the only of the quartet not to graduate from Stephenson High School (Mike Davis, of Lithonia, also went to Stephenson.) TJ is one of the wave of new linebackers taking over for the departed two deep, and is listed as the backup to Kaiwan Lewis at the MIKE position, although he could play WILL if needed. As you'll see in the trivia section, he's got the mental makeup to handle the rigors of the MIKE position, and should see plenty of playing time this season in relief of Ol' Cakelines. Here's hoping TJ lives up to the hard-hitting, ballhawking standard set by his similarly surnamed predecessor.

Trivia:
Take it away, Chris Clark:

MIKE LB TJ Holloman, one of defense's smartest players, is nicknamed "The Doctor" - given to him by DJ Swearinger last year.
— Chris Clark (@GCChrisClark) March 26, 2013

Possible Todd Ellis play-by-play call:
"Gurley takes the handoff, finds room between the tackles, and BOOM! He's leveled by TJ Holloman, and the ball is loose! Gamecocks have it! ARE. YOU. KIDDING ME! Mr. Gurley, I hope you're a fan of turn of the century Kevin Bacon sci-fi vehicles, because you just got a personal screening of HolloMan!"
