The final entry in this week's series previewing the 2015 Gamecock baseball team takes a look at South Carolina's offense, which will be led by veterans Kyle Martin and Max Schrock

The offense was hit or miss - no pun intended - at times for South Carolina last year. With guys like Grayson Greiner, Joey Pankake, and Tanner "Fastest Man In College Baseball" English having departed for the big leagues, the Gamecocks will have to find other guys who can consistently get on base and bring in runs.

South Carolina should benefit from having both Kyle Martin and Max Schrock back this year, two veterans who will be key to the success of the team. Martin opted to return for his senior year, and he'll look to improve on the career year he had last year, when he posted a team-leading .335 average. Schrock missed a lot of games last year due to various injuries, so this could be somewhat of a bounce back year for him, assuming he can stay healthy. Much like Martin, his veteran presence will be a boost for the Gamecocks.

Other returning players who will look to make an impact include seniors Connor Bright and Elliott Caldwell, juniors Marcus Mooney and DC Arendas, and sophomore Gene Cone, who came on strong during the 2014 season. Like Schrock, Bright and Caldwell also saw their quality 2014 campaigns impacted by injuries, but along with Martin and Schrock, they should help fill the holes left by guys like Greiner and Pankake.

Among the freshman, the biggest name to watch for is Alex Destino, who was selected as a third-team preseason All-American by Baseball America. A powerful hitter, Destino is expected to contribute significantly to South Carolina's offense this season. He will likely join Schrock and Martin in the middle of the order, which should be a trio of tough outs.

Last weekend's scrimmages didn't feature a ton of offense in the first two games, but the bats came alive in the third one - at least for some guys - which is hopefully a sign of good things to come. The South Carolina offense had stretches last year where it just couldn't get anything going, and while solid pitching and defense help, it's hard to win games if you cant get guys around the bases. The Gamecocks' biggest offensive issue last year, though, was the incredible number of runners that were left stranded. If that doesn't improve this year, South Carolina could be in for a stressful season.

South Carolina will kick off the 2015 season on Friday against College of Charleston. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. EST, with Jack Wynkoop set to take the mound for the Gamecocks.

Today's entry in our preview looks at the defense, which should be a strength of the team this season

Despite the departure of several talented players, the Gamecocks should field an excellent defense this season. The infield in particular is both talented and deep, and Coach Holbrook has expressed his confidence that the quality of USC's infielders will help the Gamecocks be in a position to win games.

One huge piece of the defense for the Gamecocks is senior first baseman Kyle Martin, who opted to return for the 2015 season rather than go pro after being drafted in the 20th round last year. Martin, who started every game last season, had the best fielding percentage (.995) of any returning player that played in at least half of last year's games. His talent for making great plays, as well as his experience and leadership, will be invaluable to the team this season.

Junior infielder Max Schrock missed much of last season with various injuries, most notably to his ankle and back. However, as Holbrook has noted on more than one occasion in the past few months, Schrock's offseason rehab went extremely well and he looks to be in great shape for 2015. Schrock has lost weight and is working hard to be faster and more agile; as a result he should be improved on both offense and defense.

Schrock is among the five players competing for the remaining infield spots of second baseman, shortstop, and third baseman. The others are Jordan Gore, Marcus Mooney, DC Arendas, and Madison Stokes, who have all been impressive in the preseason. Holbrook has said that with all five of those players pushing for playing time, it's possible that a couple of them will see some time in the outfield.

There are several players vying for time in the outfield as well. Sophomore Gene Cone has improved as a player and looks to have the center field spot locked down. The corner outfield spots are less sure. Senior right fielder Connor Bright will likely see significant playing time, but has missed some preseason scrimmages due to illness. Elliott Caldwell and Patrick Harrington have both impressed Holbrook in the preseason, and again there are infielders (most likely Schrock and Gore) that could see playing time in the outfield too.

South Carolina's biggest question on defense entering the season is how well they can replace Grayson Greiner at catcher. Holbrook has said that the two front-runners for the job, sophomore Logan Koch and freshman Hunter Taylor, will likely split time behind the plate over the course of the season and that he doesn't see that position as being a weakness. Though he's not sure how exactly the playing time would be split, Holbrook feels that both players have earned a chance and that having two regular catchers will help them each stay fresh over the course of the season.

All in all, the Gamecocks look to be in a strong position defensively. While there is some uncertainty about which players will start which position, having more players capable of starting than actual positions to start them at is always a great problem to have. Holbrook will have the flexibility to move players around and find the lineup that works best and South Carolina has the depth to deal with setbacks from injury or illness.

The second entry in this week's series previewing the 2015 Gamecock baseball team takes a look at what South Carolina's pitching staff looks like this season.

Quality pitching kept South Carolina in some of its games last year when the offense was MIA, and the Gamecocks were ranked ninth in the country, with a team ERA of 2.43. While some familiar faces (Jordan Montgomery, Joel Seddon, Evan Beal) have moved on, others (Jack Wynkoop, Wil Crowe) will look to help keep South Carolina among the best in the nation when it comes to pitching.

Barring an injury or other unforeseen circumstance, Wynkoop, a junior left-hander, and Crowe, a sophomore right-hander, are almost certainly going to be this year's Friday and Saturday starters. Both will look to build on their impressive 2014 campaigns, which included a 2.86 ERA and a 2.75 ERA, respectively. The Sunday starter position is still TBA, though Coach Chad Holbrook has indicated sophomore lefty Josh Reagan, who had limited appearances last year but posted a 0.36 ERA, is the frontrunner. Other options could include sophomore right-hander Reed Scott and junior lefty Vince Fiori.

South Carolina was buoyed by a strong bullpen last year, something that should continue this year. It will include familiar faces such as senior righty Cody Mincey and sophomores Matt Vogel, a right-hander, and John Parke, a lefty. Mincey led the team in relief appearances in 2014 with 29, and he recorded a commendable 1.04 ERA. Vogel had a bit less success, posting a 6.91 ERA in eight appearances, and Parke appeared just four times and had a 0.00 ERA.

Freshmen in the bullpen will include right-handers Alex Calvert, Tyler Johnson and Clarke Schmidt, though he's also a potential Sunday starter candidate. Left-handed freshmen include Alex Destino and Banks Cromer.

Right-handed sophomore Taylor Widener, who posted a 1.79 ERA in 2014, will take over the closer's role this season.

There's a pretty wide range of preseason expectations for the Gamecocks within the top 25, although all but one poll does have them as a top 15 team. Preseason rankings, by necessity, involve lots of guesswork and are therefore susceptible to being very wrong. However they do give a good indication of a team's perceived ability to answer the questions that they face entering the season.

The three polls that have the Gamecocks in the 10-15 range are probably about right as far as appropriate expectations for this team, at least until we learn more by seeing them in action. South Carolina has some good returning experience and should have the talent to fill the open positions left by last year's departures. The biggest question is whether this team will coalesce and play to the potential that they appear to have.

Despite the expectation that the Gamecocks will be very solid as a team, only one player received preseason All-American honors. Freshman utility player Alex Destino was selected as a third-team All-American by Baseball America. Destino is a left-handed pitcher and a powerful hitter and should contribute in both roles this season.

South Carolina will be featured in conference games on the SEC Network, ESPN2 and ESPNU 12 times this season.

Television times and channels for the 2015 baseball season were announced by the SEC Tuesday afternoon. Given that the SEC Network is here now, there will be more televised contests for the Gamecocks - and the rest of the teams in the conference - than in the past. How many more, you ask? Last year, South Carolina had seven televised conference games. This year, they've come close to doubling that, with 12. One game from the Clemson series will also be broadcast on the SEC Network. There will also be tons of matchups, both in and out of conference, broadcast as SEC Network + events, which will be available on SECNetwork.com and WatchESPN.com.

Here are the games that will be televised on the SEC Network/ESPN2/ESPNU this season:
