South Carolina’s 2018 recruiting class won’t be that large with the team holding a pair of available scholarships as it stands right now. And while the team is one of many going after big fish Zion Williamson, they’re in good standing with another forward.

Fayetteville (N.C.) Northwood Temple senior Manny Bates released his top seven yesterday. South Carolina is among the group along with Depaul, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, Lousiville, N.C. State and Xavier.

Bates is considered a four-star prospect, the 24th-ranked power forward in his class, and the #7 player in North Carolina according to 247Sports. It looks like he’s being recruited as Chris Silva’s heir apparent at the PF spot in a couple of years’ time as he certainly has the size and frame to become a strong player up front for Frank Martin and the Gamecocks.

“[T]hey want me to come in for their big man this year and have an impact as a freshman,” Bates told ElevateHoops yesterday.

Martin certainly has had a good track record of developing big men during his tenure at South Carolina. Bates has an opportunity to join that list if he ends up pulling the trigger and choosing the Gamecocks, but he’ll have several other schools in his ear as the process plays out.

Randy Onwuasor update

Graduate transfer Randy Onwuasor was set to take an official visit to South Carolina this past Friday. However, he instead headed to Baton Rouge to see Will Wade and LSU that day, a clear bad sign for the Gamecocks and their chances of landing the guard. That was confirmed when he announced on Saturday that he would finish out his eligibility with the Tigers.

Onwuasor would have been a nice addition, but the Gamecocks can rest in the fact that they have Kory Holden coming eligible this fall along with what should be a good addition in grad transfer Frank Booker. But with Onwuasor off the board, this upcoming class should be considered all set.
