Four-star offensive tackle Christian Pellage of Brooksville (Fl.) Nature Coast Tech committed to South Carolina on Friday. The 6'7, 282-pound lineman chose the Gamecocks over 30 competing FBS offers, most notably Alabama, Florida, Florida State, and Georgia.
Pellage is the No. 252 overall prospect and the 27th-best offensive tackle in the 2015 class, according 252nd-best player in the nation, 27th-best offensive tackle and 36th-best player from the state of Florida. He is the 26th player to commit to South Carolina's 2015 recruiting class, which holds steady at No. 4 in the country with this news. Pellage joins fellow four-star prospects Paris Palmer and Austin Clark in the Gamecocks' offensive tackle class.
What type of player are the Gamecocks getting?
Pellage has a long frame but has shown consistent muscle gain over his prep career which should allow him to play at the 300-pound level once he gets to college. He also shows exceptional athleticism for a man of his size, and finishes blocks with a blend of tenacity and aggressiveness. The talented prospect also shows good bend for his height and can adjust in the open field to make second level blocks. Pellage will need to work on generating more power in his lower body to create more impact during run blocking, but those are techniques that are coached in depth at the collegiate level.
At this point in his career, Pellage is a better run blocker than pass blocker but still shows good athleticism and quickness in his feet when facing pass rushers. With improved body control and coaching he should be able to use his long frame to help shield quarterbacks from rush ends. With the exodus of starting tackles Corey Robinson and potentially Brandon Shell after the 2014 season, Pellage will have a chance to compete for playing time right away. However, a redshirt year would allow him to gain weight and work on his technique moving forward.
