Brandon McIlwain to enroll early at South Carolina, will play football and baseball

Facing a life-changing decision, one of South Carolina's top commits chose to head to school instead of entering the MLB Draft.

New South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp, baseball coach Chad Holbrook, and Gamecock fans everywhere received great news Thursday afternoon as 2016 quarterback recruit Brandon McIlwain announced his decision to enroll early at South Carolina.

McIlwain, a highly regarded football and baseball prospect - ranked as the number 16 high school baseball prospect at Baseball America, was presented with a tough decision regarding his future. Enroll early at South Carolina and start competing for the starting QB job and also compete for playing time on Chad Holbrook's Gamecock baseball team, or wait until the MLB draft in June and possibly be given a multi-million dollar signing bonus considering his draft slot? McIlwain decided his heart was at his parents' alma mater in South Carolina, and will head to school instead of pursuing a professional baseball career.

The 6', 200-lb. McIlwain will have the opportunity to now go through spring practice with the Gamecock football team and give himself more time to both learn the offense and adjust to the college game by the time fall camp starts in August. McIlwain will also be given the opportunity to help the Gamecock baseball team this year; they open play on February 19.
