South Carolina football recruiting: Brandon McIlwain shines; other future Gamecocks in action on high school gridiron

We go around the country to see how the Gamecocks' high school commits performed.

--Big night for Council Rock North (Pa.) QB Brandon McIlwain in a 56-36 loss to start the season. McIlwain had 259 all-purpose yards, including two touchdowns passing and two touchdowns on the ground, at halftime. He would add one more TD through the air in a losing effort.

--Steve Spurrier was on hand downstate to see Bryan Edwards and Conway roll past Socastee 42-8. Edwards treated Spurrier to a great performance, making four catches for 125 yards and a touchdown. The four-star receiver has now crested the 100-yard receiving mark twice this season thus far.

--In Alabama, LB P.J. Blue and his Montgomery Park Crossing Thunderbirds are now 3-0 with their 21-7 win over Dothan on Thursday night. Park Crossing takes on Wetumpka next.

--In Georgia, DB Marlon Character and Atlanta Grady led Carver 21-7 at halftime. Unfortunately, that game was suspended around 10:30 last night as there was a shooting near Grady High School's stadium, where the game was taking place.

--Also in Georgia, Jordan Smith and Lithonia (Ga.) shut out Decatur (Ga.) Towers, 21-0. Cecil Stallings and Tucker blitzed Stone Mountain 69-12 to bounce back from an opening week loss.

--In North Carolina, RB C.J. Freeman played a key role as Northern Guilford topped Northwest Guilford 21-13. Freeman had two TD runs and a two-point conversion as part of his stat line.

--In Virginia, commit J.J. Givens helped his Atlee team crush Deep Run 52-13 on Thursday to open their high school football season. Givens recorded an interception and later hauled in a 48-yard TD pass for the game's opening score.

--Tough loss for Tre Jackson and Baton Rouge (La.) University Lab to open the season as they fell to Rummel 24-7. No full stats for Jackson yet, although he did have a 12-yard completion as part of his final line.

--Chris Smith and Rock Hill (S.C.) South Pointe took on Rock Creek Academy (Ind.).

Postponed

--Will Putnam and Hickory Ridge (N.C.) will host Concord (N.C.) Robinson on Monday due to adverse weather conditions last night in the Charlotte area. We'll update their result then.
