Kaleb Chalmers, the former Clemson cornerback that was kicked off the team back in March before going JUCO in the fall, will make his return to FBS with South Carolina. Chalmers is set to sign at 4pm today, but made his intentions known to Will Muschamp this morning.
Chalmers, who became a primary target after Damarri Mathis reopened his recruitment a few weeks ago, played for a Northwest Mississippi CC team that finished ranked sixth in the country. He recorded 30 tackles and and recorded while breaking up 13 passes and notching 14 passes defensed. His numbers show that he’ll be relied on as a shutdown defender - whether those stats translate to FBS remains to be seen because, well, he never played a game for the Tigers. But it’s likely that he and Jamyest Williams will push incumbents Rashad Fenton and Jamarcus King for an opportunity to be worked heavily into the rotation at cornerback next year.
With Chalmers’ pledge, the Gamecocks now have 21 commitments in the class of 2017. Chalmers is the third CB, joining Williams and Tavyn Jackson.
