South Carolina Football Recruiting: Investigating the #SpursUp, big target given 5-star status

All of the day's recruiting news and notes in one place.

#SpursUp Update

24 hours later and we still don't have a name of who the #SpursUp was for on Wednesday night. Here's what we do know: it is an offensive player, it is apparently not Tyreek Johnson and the player was supposed to be in Columbia today to make things official but couldn't make it, so will now reveal himself on Saturday. That certainly does sound a lot like Johnson's situation (he was going to come by the school yesterday, alone, and then come with his parents Saturday - where he would likely commit) but supposedly it isn't him. We will see. Here's to another day of waiting!

Commitment Watch

As referenced above, 2017 Lakewood defensive end Tyreek Johnson has been on commitment watch to South Carolina for the last couple of weeks and that commitment is very likely to come on Saturday when he visits campus with his parents. It is yet to be seen whether he is the #SpursUp commitment or not, but there were reports indicating he was not late Wednesday evening.

Whatever the case, Johnson, at 6'4 and 245 lbs. has good size and upside and is a take for South Carolina should he pull the trigger on Saturday.

Offers and Visits

- The Gamecocks offered 2017 3-star athlete Jalen Browder of Dallas, Georgia on Thursday.

Browder, who carries offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Maryland and others, looks good on film and shows tons of athleticism and playmaking ability with the ball in hands - something South Carolina needs more of in a bad way.

- 2017 receiver Austin Connor of Dutch Fork was at the Gamecock's practice on Thursday. South Carolina was Connor's first SEC offer back on March 3 and is in a good position with him at this point. Fun fact about Connor: this past week he was offered by both Georgia and West Point, if that gives you any indication of both the talent and smarts he has. Connor currently has no ranking on any major recruiting sites, but given his growing offer sheet, that should change sometime soon.

- Airport High School 2017 athlete Kerryon Richardson tweeted on Thursday that he would be on campus this coming Tuesday to see the Gamecocks program up close for an official visit.

Richardson carries offers from Coastal Carolina, Appalachian State and Miami (Ohio) but has not been formally offered yet by the South Carolina staff.

Thomas Given 5 Stars

- 24/7 Sports released their top 300 players for the class of 2018 on Thursday and there are only four 5-star players in the initial rankings - one of which is Gamecocks target Xavier Thomas, who we highlighted yesterday. Thomas is the highest rated defensive end in the country for the 2018 class and the top player in both of the Carolinas. Thomas grew up cheering for the Gamecocks, so the staying power is definitely there for this big-time recruit.
