Atlanta-area DE Devonte Wyatt commits to South Carolina football

The Gamecocks add a second defensive end to its 2017 recruiting class.

Joshua S. Kelly-USA TODAY Sports

Shortly after earning a scholarship offer from Coach Muschamp's recruiting staff, Devonte Wyatt committed to South Carolina.

Wyatt, a 6'4", 260 pound defensive end from Decatur, Georgia, is a relative unknown at this point in the recruiting cycle, not being listed as having any stars on 247Sports.com. South Carolina is his first offer, but he has the size and athleticism (4.6 40 time) to develop into a starting-caliber defensive end. He's considered to be a raw athlete, but his tape reveals a player with a good motor and good closing speed on the ball-carrier. What impressed me most was his tendency to not give up on the play and track runners down into the second and third levels of the defense. That sort of never-quit motor is sorely needed on the underachieving Gamecock defense.

Wyatt is the tenth recruit in the 2017 recruiting class, and is the second defensive end committed. He joins fellow in-state product Tyreek Johnson (Lakewood High) as the other DE recruit on the list right now. The class is ranked 32nd in the country and 9th in the SEC, with an opportunity to move up over the coming weeks with several big names expected to commit in the near future.
