Will Muschamp and the Gamecocks have had a great run of success in recent weeks in the recruiting department. They hope that it continues today as Wando (S.C.) WR OrTre Smith makes his college decision: will it be South Carolina or Clemson?
Smith would stand to join a wide receiver corps that is finding their way in 2016 but should benefit from a year of play under their belt in 2017. With a pair of redshirt juniors, a redshirt senior, and a group of sophomores projected to be in the rotation next year, it's not hard to see Smith get in the mix for immediate playing time when he arrives on campus. He'd be bringing some size to the table - his 6'3", 215-pound frame is about the same as Bryan Edwards.
Getting a player like Smith would be a significant coup in the Carolina/Clemson recruiting wars. As both teams battle for elite in-state talent, Smith's pledge would tip the scales in the Gamecocks' favor, which will help down the road with players like Dakereon Joyner and the big fish, Xavier Thomas, still up for grabs inside the state's borders. Smith and Joyner already have a great relationship, so it's fairly obvious that the latter, along with Thomas, will be keeping an eye on things this evening to see where the coveted WR ends up.
The good news has come rather frequently for South Carolina on the recruiting trail since Muschamp took the reins of the program. Can he add another top-line pledge in OrTre Smith and take a big step towards establishing Columbia as a destination for the state's top players? We'll find out at 6 p.m. tonight.
