South Carolina football recruiting: Big visit weekend in progress

Over a dozen recruits are on campus this weekend.

The final push to National Signing Day has begun. With the dead period having been over for a few days, Will Muschamp and the South Carolina football staff are back at work looking to spot new talent. But a huge recruiting weekend is in progress as over a dozen recruits - both committed and non-committed - will descend on Columbia as we sit just 18 days from February 1.

Here are the players that are on the list for this weekend:

Committed

Eric Douglas

Douglas will be on campus at the same time as his friend and teammate T.J. Moore, so he’ll try to work him one last time to get him to reconsider.

Sherrod Greene

Greene has been in Columbia a number of times during the recruiting process, and has never been a threat to pull back his July commitment. Aside from an Alabama offer in June, there hasn’t been any reason to think he’ll be signing anywhere else other than South Carolina in two and a half weeks.

Hamsah Nasirildeen

The DB and Gamecocks commit had a good showing at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl last week in San Antonio. He took an official to Florida State back in October, but there’s no chance of the Noles flipping his pledge. He’ll be part of a nice receiver haul that includes Shi Smith and OrTre Smith.

Will Register

It seems like we’ve been talking about this kid forever, but he’ll finally be on campus for his official visit before putting pen to paper on February 1. The first pledge of the 2017 class committed all the way back in June (2015) and has held firm, even through a 3-9 season and a coaching change.

Jay Urich

Tennessee was poking around Urich a few months ago, but nothing ultimately came of their interest. He was down to Duke and South Carolina back in May before ultimately deciding to stay in-state and play for the Gamecocks.

Committed elsewhere

T.J. Moore - committed to Florida

The former Gamecocks pledge is now a member of Florida’s 2017 recruiting class, but is still honoring his official visit to Columbia. I doubt Carolina flips him back, especially with Tony Gray still in their sights.

Devonte Wyatt - committed to Georgia

Another former pledge, he’s now committed to Georgia, but like Moore, is still taking his official visit. Word is that he’s still wavering in his decision, though. He’ll take officials to Georgia (next week) and Florida (the week after), after which we’ll know where his mind’s at.

Undecided

Tony Gray

For my money, Gray’s the most important visitor of this weekend. Will Muschamp and new (old?) OL coach Eric Wolford will be working the tackle (and Jamyest Williams teammate) extra hard to add a big piece to their unit heading into the 2017 season.

Brad Johnson

Johnson visited Virginia Tech in December and will follow this weekend’s visit to Columbia with one at Tennessee next week. The Gamecocks already have the class of 2017’s #1 and #2 players in the state in OrTre Smith (enrolled and on-campus) and Shi Smith (set to sign on NSD); they’ll try to strike gold again with South Carolina’s #3 player.

Jordan Rhodes

Rhodes is a great story - this past season was only his second year playing high school football and the first time he saw substantial action. After this week, the OL from the Atlanta area will take officials to Mississippi State, Mizzou, and Cincinnati, respectively, before making his decision.

Jaylen Twyman

Twyman OVed to Pitt in December and will take one at Mizzou at some point this month. He’d definitely give the Gamecocks some size up front (290 pounds, to be exact), so we’ll see what comes of this weekend after the visit’s over with.

Bryan picks up B1G offer

Of course, the current pledges for South Carolina aren’t hands-off at all. Kyshawn Bryan was offered by Iowa yesterday, according to Rivals’ Blair Sanderson. The Fort Lauderdale RB will take an official visit to Oregon State next week and to Iowa City the week following. I tweeted on the @GABARecruiting feed last night that with Caleb Kinlaw joining the Gamecocks as a walk-on and the amount of depth at the RB position going into 2017, it might not be a surprise if Bryan flips by the 1st.

Tennessee sophomore WR offered

The staff extended an offer to a Tennessee wide receiver yesterday as they were the first for Knoxville (Tenn.) Farragut 2019 Jaden Gibbs. Gibbs has already visited Kentucky, Vandy, Tennessee, and camped at FCS Chattanooga.
