South Carolina’s Jamyest Williams named an “SEC true freshman to watch” by ESPN

New South Carolina signee Jamyest Williams has been regarded as a player that can help reshape the Gamecocks’ backfield. While the staff and fans had to sweat it out for a bit while he mulled over a late push by Georgia, they breathed a sign of relief when they learned that he was sticking with his commitment and heading to Columbia after all.

Williams is getting some attention as the national outlets begin to break down each class and spotlight key incoming freshmen that they think will make a difference right away. One of those national outlets is ESPN, where SEC reporter Greg Ostendorf had some high praise for the Loganville (Ga.) Grayson High product:

[I]f we’re talking about the player I’m most excited about, it’s Jamyest Williams. The 5-foot-9, 173-pound cornerback is the highest-ranked player South Carolina has signed in the ESPN 300 (No. 39) since Jadeveon Clowney in 2011. The Georgia native was a major coup for Will Muschamp and his staff, and the odds of him playing early are pretty high. On Wednesday, Muschamp told reporters that Williams is expected to come in and contribute at corner, nickel or as a potential returner. Basically, they just want to get him on the field early. So remember the name because you'll be hearing it a lot next fall.

So there’s one writer that’s expecting good things from Williams right out of the gate. While the Gamecocks suffered their share of late decommitments (Hamsah Nasirildeen being the main one), they were able to hang on to Williams and add players like Aaron Sterling and Brad Johnson on National Signing Day to ensure a top 25 class. Here's hoping the hype materializes into a successful career for Williams and the rest of the incoming Gamecocks.
