The South Carolina Gamecocks can send a few shock waves through the College Football Playoff rankings as they welcome the #11 Florida Gators to Williams-Brice Stadium, the Gamecocks' first home game in several weeks.
The Gators had a near miss last week against the Vanderbilt Commodores but pulled it off in the end as Austin Hardin, who had struggled throughout the season, nailed a 43-yard field goal to give his team a 9-6 lead and a SEC East-clinching victory. But the Gators aren't satisfied with that. They have their sights set on much more: a possible trip to a New Year's Six Bowl. They still have an outside chance to make a semifinal game, but will need to run the table and get some help to do so.
Meanwhile, the Gamecocks have something to play for themselves as they cling to very faint bowl hopes. They will need to win their next three - today, next Saturday against The Citadel, and November 28 against Clemson - to get to the magic number of six wins. Five might do it, but six wins will do it for sure. If they were to pull it off, they will have done so by spoiling the hopes of a pair of teams poised to be playing on New Year's Day.
