Jacob August
RS Freshman
Tight End
6'6", 257 lbs.
Columbia, SC/Cardinal Newman/Fork Union Military Academy
Recruitment
Offered by USC and Georgia, but to punt, not play tight end. Was also offered by Bucknell, Chattanooga, Dartmouth, Richmond, Southern Miss and Temple.
College Career
After a year of prep at Fork Union, August originally planned to walk on with Penn State as a TE in 2013, but made the decision to head back to South Carolina and walk on with the Gamecocks last January. He redshirted last year but participated in workouts and shared top offensive freshman honors with Connor Mitch.
2015 Outlook
With Jerell Adams the presumptive starter at TE in 2015, August provides some third-string options behind Kevin Crosby on the depth chart. If nothing else, he certainly brings a great deal of height as one of the team's tallest players (not as tall, though, as big 6'9" Mason Zandi on the offensive line).
Trivia
We know Steve Spurrier has a penchant for nicknaming his players, but he dialed it way back with August, who he nicknamed "Dan August" after Burt Reynolds' title character in a ABC crime drama that aired from 1970-1971. (That was 45 years ago. I mean, this was back before some players' parents were even born.) Apparently Spurrier and about 37 other people watched the show before it was cancelled after 26 episodes. Seriously, if you're reading this and actually remember it, please comment below.
