The South Carolina Gamecocks held their last Saturday scrimmage at Williams-Brice Stadium - and we have some good news to share. All hope is not lost in Gamecock land!
QB decision coming mid-week?
--The question everyone wants to know the answer to: when will a starting quarterback be named? Steve Spurrier said after the scrimmage that while one QB didn't outplay the rest of them, hopefully he "can announce (a starter) this week sometime." The team scrimmages on Monday night, followed by a regular practice on Tuesday, and with Wednesday's practice marking the final one before game week preparation (UNC is a week from Thursday!), we'd think that we'd know something before then. Connor Mitch did throw two interceptions in this session, while Lorenzo Nunez mishandled a snap.
Offense "better"
--Spurrier had some harsh criticism for his offense (especially his quarterbacks) after last week's scrimmage, but was happy with what he saw from the unit today. Having an especially good day: Brandon Wilds. The "Bash" part of the #BASHANDDASH running back duo had a 70-yard rushing touchdown today, and even did a little shot-calling for the season. Wilds and David Williams may be working in tandem this year in the backfield, but it's clear that Wilds will be the "featured" back, if you will. However, Spurrier did note that the offense as a whole was "pretty careless" at times, including some WR drops and a few fumbles.
It wasn't all good news...
--After Spurrier had given his defense high marks in recent days, Jon Hoke wasn't thrilled with their performance this morning. Fortunately, they have been projecting pretty well throughout the preseason, so this may be just a little blip on the radar screen, and hopefully Hoke can get them squared away and on the same page during the remaining practice sessions. As mentioned above, though, they did pick up a couple of INTs during the session.
