Will Muschamp’s return to the Swamp didn’t go well at all. South Carolina put together a poor performance in Gainesville, falling 20-7 to the Florida Gators at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
The Gamecocks sleepwalked through three quarters of play while Muschamp’s former team built a 20-0 lead. It would have been much more if not for two end zone turnovers and an Antonio Callaway punt return for a touchdown that was called back on a hold. Carolina finally found the scoreboard on a short one-yard carry by David Williams to make it 20-7 with 6:53 left in the fourth. Other than than, it was all Gators, who dominated on the ground, through the air, on defense, and in the special teams department.
Jake Bentley failed to get much going through the air as he was 18-32 for 213 yards (the longest gain coming on a 47-yard pass to Hayden Hurst with under two minutes left). He also threw his first interception of the season. Carolina got absolutely nothing on the ground, gaining just 43 yards on 30 carries, as the Gators registered 12 tackles for a loss. Meanwhile, the Gators struck for 173 yards on the ground, while four different receivers registered 30 yards or more through the air. Austin Appleby finished 17-21 for 201 yards, two touchdowns and a pick while gaining 34 yards on six carries.
The Gamecocks drop to 5-5 on the season and host FCS Western Carolina on Senior Day next Saturday.
