Freshman offensive lineman Darius Whitfield is set to transfer from South Carolina, as first reported by GamecockCentral.com’s Chris Clark. Whitfield, a defensive end at Mobile (Ala.) St. Paul’s Episcopal, was converted to an offensive lineman from his natural position on the defensive side of the ball but would end up redshirting this season. He was ranked as a three-star recruit and the country’s #25 strongside defensive end at 247Sports.com.
A 6’3”, 265-pounder, Whitfield received offers from Arizona State, Arkansas, Florida, Florida State, Louisville, LSU, and Tennessee, among others. Because he sat out the season as a redshirt in 2016, he will have all of his eligibility remaining wherever he chooses to transfer. As for the reason for his departure, it’s not known at this time, but it could be that he feels that he can get better opportunities to play at another school that would not have been afforded to him at South Carolina.
