Today, South Carolina Coach Will Muschamp announced that linebackers Sherrod PIttman and Jalen Dread are leaving the program and transferring elsewhere. Pittman, a former four-star signee out of Jacksonville, Florida for the Class of 2015, redshirted his freshman season as he recovered from a broken knee his last year of high school. He saw limited action last year, logging three tackles while also serving a two game suspension for a violation of team rules.
Jalen Dread, a sophomore linebacker, didn’t see the field this past season after logging ten games on special teams in 2015. Dread, a former three star linebacker from Alabama, was not expected to contribute much this season and playing time was likely the major reasoning behind his transfer.
Although retaining experience is important, as right now only three scholarship linebackers have seen game action, this will open up playing time for younger players to step in and contribute immediately.
