Eight wins. Zero Losses. The South Carolina women's basketball team beat the Duke Blue Devils 66-55 in Columbia, SC on Sunday afternoon. The fourteenth ranked team in the nation kept it close throughout the matchup but the Gamecocks pulled away, outscoring the visitors by seven points in the fourth quarter.
For the home side it was A'Ja Wilson who had a career day with a double- double of 28 points and 11 rebounds. Carolina's other leading scoring was also in their front court as center Alaina Coates had 16 points with 7 rebounds. Star guard Tiffany Mitchell was the team's third player in double figures with 12 points however, the former All-American only shot 3-13 from the field.
The Blue Devils also had three players score over 10 points as guard Kyra Lambert led the team with 16. Azura Stevens and Oderah Chidom were the other two with 11 and 10 points, respectively. The forwards combined for 17 of the squad's 36 rebounds on the day. Kendall Cooper added 6 points to go along with 5 rebounds coming off the bench.
This game just might have well showed the full potential of Wilson. She has been a major factor all season but today she showed that on a day when team leader Mitchell was off, she can be counted on to step up and carry the team. This was South Carolina's third win over a ranked opponent this year.
The team will be back in action a week from today on December 13 as they take on Winthrop at home at 2:00 P.M.
