Dawn Staley continues to make South Carolina a destination for women’s basketball players. She grabbed another big-time recruit as point guard Destanni Henderson, ranked #10 in espnW’s HoopGurlz rankings for the class of 2018, committed to the Gamecocks yesterday. The announcement was first reported by the Fort Myers News-Press.
Henderson, who spurned schools like Florida State, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Tennessee, is the #2 point guard in her class and the first top-10 recruit for the Gamecocks since A’ja Wilson and Jataire White, the #1 and #7 recruits in the class of 2014, respectively. She was a member of the United States’ U-17 team last year and was part of a squad that took the bronze medal in the FIBA World Championship this past summer in Spain. Thus far at Fort Myers High in Florida, she has averaging 18.7 points and 5.4 steals per game in her junior season. Ironically, she played against fellow Gamecocks commit LaDazhia Williams and Lakewood Ranch last night, a game Fort Myers won 61-60.
Henderson is the Gamecocks’ first pledge out of the class of 2018. They have four committed players in the class of 2017: Elisia Grissett (#24 in espnW’s rankings), Williams (#47), Bianca Jackson (#54), and Haley Troup.
