The men’s NCAA Tournament field was revealed last night. Now, it’s the women’s turn: the 64 teams headed to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament will be unveiled this evening on ESPN.
After winning the SEC Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina figures to get their fourth straight #1 seed and the right to host the first two rounds of the NCAAs at Colonial Life Arena. The Gamecocks’ path through the SEC field included wins over Georgia, Kentucky and Mississippi State, with the final two wins helping their case for a top seed tremendously. Charlie Creme’s updated bracketology from last night does show South Carolina as a top seed in the Oklahoma City region opening against the Big South’s UNC Asheville. The winner of that one would take on ninth-seeded Michigan State or - how’s this for narrative - eighth-seeded Temple, where Dawn Staley coached for eight seasons before taking the reins of the South Carolina program in 2008.
Like last year, the UConn Huskies will be named the #1 overall seed in the tournament and will be the prohibitive favorites to win an incredible fifth straight NCAA title. Despite losing Breanna Stewart, Moriah Jefferson and Morgan Tuck to the WNBA, Geno Auriemma has rebooted instead of rebuilt, and behind Gabby Williams, they’ve won 107 games in a row. But the magic number for them will be 113: that will equal a second straight undefeated season (the seventh in school history) and them hoisting the trophy in Dallas on April 2.
