The South Carolina Gamecocks took care of business this weekend, earning their first series sweep of the season against Utah Valley and outscoring the Wolverines 31-11. This afternoon, USC closes an eight-game homestand with its last chance for a tune-up before the big rivalry series when it takes on Appalachian State.
The Mountaineers (2-4) are coming off a series win against Manhattan, and will send senior right-hander Brandon Boone to the mound. Boone, who went 3-5 with a 5.01 ERA and 50 strikeouts last year, has pitched two scoreless innings this season.
The Gamecocks (6-1) will counter with sophomore lefty John Gilreath, who is 1-1 with a couple scoreless frames and three strikeouts to his credit so far.
South Carolina leads the series 14-1, and is currently on a nine-game winning streak against App.
