Gamecock women earn No. 1 seed in NCAA Tournament

Rolling into March Madness as a top seed for the fifth time in program history.

The South Carolina Gamecock women will start their NCAA Tournament journey as one of the event's top four seeds.

The reigning SEC champion Gamecocks (22-4) will meet 16-seed Mercer on Sunday at 6 p.m.

The tournament is being played entirely in San Antonio this year, with South Carolina assigned to the Hemisfair region. Other teams in their region include Maryland (No. 2), UCLA (No. 3), West Virginia (No. 4), and Georgia Tech (No. 5).

The tournament's other No. 1 seeds are UConn, Stanford, and N.C. State. The Huskies and Wolfpack defeated South Carolina in the regular season.

Mercer (19-6) won the Southern Conference tournament, walloping Wofford 60-38.
