Lance Thompson posted a tweet Thursday indicating that he has been hired by new South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp.

Thompson is the third coach to follow Muschamp from Auburn. He was vying for the open defensive coordinator position at Auburn after Muschamp's departure to South Carolina. Thompson led the Auburn defense in its 31-10 victory over Memphis in the Birmingham Bowl. Immediately after the victory, it was announced Auburn hired then-current LSU defensive coordinator and former Clemson defensive coordinator Kevin Steele.

Prior to joining Auburn in 2015 to coach linebackers, Thompson coached two separate times at rival school Alabama from 2007-2008 and 2012-2015. He has also coached linebackers at Tennessee from 2009-2011 and was the UCF defensive coordinator from 2004-2006. While at Alabama, Thompson was credited with landing many highly ranked national recruits, including the likes of Julio Jones. His recruiting prowess will strengthen an already impressive South Carolina staff.
