Final Thoughts on the SEC Championship Game: Time to Give Fate a Chance
in 1999, the South Carolina Gamecocks wrapped up an utterly forgettable decade of football. Carolina won 45 games over the course of the 1990s, lost 69, and tied 3. That's 45-69-3, if you needed me to repeat it. Much like they had hoped hiring hot young Bobby Bowden disciple Brad Scott would invigorate the stagnant program in 1994, Carolina fans had hoped that hiring legendary Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz would help the program recover from the depths Scott's failed tenure took the program to. Holtz's first year, though, was more of the same. In fact, it was worse--Holtz would take the Gamecocks to an unenviable 0-11 record.
South Carolina football has always been an exercise in futility. Carolina has one conference championship to its credit. It didn't win a bowl game until 1995. It lost to Navy when it had a chance to come to within a game of playing for the national title. What happened in Hotlz's first season in Columbia didn't really surprise anyone. Carolina Gamecocks fans, however, have always stood by their team, even during that forgettable 0-11 season. They've always, often to the ridicule of their rivals' fans, believed that it was fated that God would smile on the Gamecocks one day.
The ancient Greeks believed that fate was something that man couldn't control, but these days, most of us believe that we make our own good luck. This isn't the place to answer that age-old question, but it is worth observing here than when it comes to Gamecocks football, we've made our own luck as of late. Holtz and, later, Steve Spurrier wouldn't have come here if they didn't believe that this school and state have the resources and support available to provide the foundation for a championship contender. And, ever since that 0-11 record the Gamecocks fell to in 1999, things have been getting a bit better for us. 2000 and 2001 would be banner years for Carolina; the Gamecocks would go 8-4 and 9-3, respectively, and would punctuate both seasons with Outback Bowl victories over the storied Ohio St. Buckeyes.
Those two years inaugurated the most successful decade in Carolina football history. It hasn't all been perfect, of course. The Holtz era ended on a prolonged down note, while the early promise of the Spurrier era hit some significant roadblocks in 2007 and 2008. However, the program has remained competitive, never quite returning to the depths of mediocrity it plunged too back in 1999. This is a different program. It's one that's grown over the past 10 years into a significant player in the SEC.
Earlier this year, when South Carolina achieved what I think we'll one day look back on as a milestone victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide, Steve Spurrier told us that before the game, he had told his team that if they gave fate a chance, good things might work out for them. To hear him talk, you'd think that he thought that football is nothing but a game of chance. And maybe there is some chance involved in the path we've followed to get to what's going to go down tomorrow. However, we all know that Steve Spurrier is no mystic. This is a guy who believes in his ability to make a difference. And when he came to Carolina, he saw an opportunity. "Why not us?" was not idle speculation; it was a reasonable statement of fact. Why shouldn't Carolina do something that it's always had the potential to do? I hate to put words into the guy's mouth, but I think that when Spurrier told his team to "give fate a chance," he just meant to go ought and finally make good on the investment that's been put into Carolina football since the beginning. It took Spurrier to put the finishing touches on the team that would finally put itself in a position to do that, and for that reason I think we'll remember him as the program's greatest coach. But the potential has always been here; Spurrier knows that as well as anyone. That's why he's here.
Tomorrow afternoon, we play the Auburn Tigers for the SEC Championship. No one is giving us a chance to win. The Tigers are a consensus pick to play for the BCS Title and field the unanimous favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. Carolina, on the other hand, should just be happy to be here, right? The Gamecocks don't really stand any chance of knocking off the mighty Tigers, do they?
Wrong. I not only think we stand a chance in this game; I think we're going to win. Over the past few weeks, the light has come on for this team. The weight of history was lifted against the Florida Gators three weeks ago, and this team now realizes that it's good enough to finish what it's started over the course of the season. We're confident and playing better than we ever have. Auburn won't know what hit them.
How do I know this? Sometimes you just have to give fate a chance.

I'm sure you didn't see 36-14, either.
But seeing is believing. Enjoy the Music City Bowl.

Oh, I saw that, without a doubt.
South Carolina’s victory did not surprise me at all.
I actually didn’t see the 14. I rather figured it’d be 36-7. :)
Congrats on beating our worst team in at least 20 years, though. And a sincere congrats on making it to Atlanta. It’s tough, and your team deserved it. I just don’t think they can hang with Auburn. But weirder things have happened.

Honestly, thanks.
I was a little out of line there at first, but I knew you could take it. You’re right; we didn’t exactly beat Florida at its finest. I think we have a better chance against Auburn than you might think, but we’ll see.

How IS the world through Gator-colored glasses these days?
Do botched options and crushing home losses look the same as they do to the unadorned eye?
Anyway, of course you don’t see it happening — nobody sees it. Nobody saw us beating Bama, or wiping the floor with the Gators in Gainesville. I sit here now thinking we were better set up to win both of those games than we are the Auburn game…but you just don’t know. Excellent post GM, really well written and inspirational. Even if we don’t pull it off, it’s nice to have that one in the archives.

Easy fellas, easy.
I’m not the enemy. Our toothless Gators scare no one.
No, it’s not fun in Gator Country this year, and I guess you’d know what that feels like after decades of similar misery. It’s not acceptable around here, and it will get fixed, even if it has to be the ‘hard way’.
Our squad could lose one additional game in the bowl season to go 7-6, which no Gators squad has done since the early 80s. They have a chance at history…

We certainly know what it feels like. I guess this post was about that to some degree.
I’m sure the Gators will be back soon. You’ve stockpiled too much talent not to be. I’m not sure what I think of Urban’s coaching this year, but over the long haul he’s proven himself to be a good coach, so I’m sure he has some ideas.

Excellent post. I'm even more fired up than I already was.
I’m ready to finally beat Auburn and I’m ready to win the SEC while we’re at it. I feel the same way tonight that I did during the CWS; this seems like a team of destiny. It won’t be easy — we Gamecocks NEVER do things the easy way — but we have a chance and it’s right there for the taking. We’ve knocked down so many barriers this year that taking care of one more isn’t asking the impossible, right?
In the event we don’t prevail tomorrow night, this is still an extremely successful season and great building block for the future. But I know every other USC grad, fan, etc. is with me in wanting this win as bad as I do.
Go Cocks! Go, fight, win, kick ass!

Anything can happen.
I have a notion how it might go, but I don’t really know what will end up happening until it happens. I’m just astonished the Fan Confidence Poll is up to something around 90%. Does that mean our fan base is 90% confident in a victory over Auburn? I’m 50-60% confident. I think Carolina has a lot of intangibles going their way for tomorrow, which have been talked about a lot already. I can’t wait! It’s exciting. I just hope my excitement doesn’t turn into utter horror if we start to get blown out.

The Big Picture...
…says that win or lose this is a football program on the rise. As a new fan, it’s insightful to get the historical perspective and appreciate the tough times Gamecock faithful have endured over the years. That history will only make the bright future of this program that much sweeter.
Just a quick comment on the game. Everyone wants to talk about the vulnerability of Auburn’s poor secondary. We all agree this group can be exploited but Lattimore’s success in the ground game remains the key in my mind. Extended USC drives that eat up clock and keep the ball out of Newton’s hands will give us our best shot at taking Auburn down. Dominate the time of possession and win the game!

Best of luck to y'all!
I hope you bring the championship home with you.
Today, I am also a University of South Florida fan. Strange days, indeed.
Hey Oliver Luck, I absolutely hate that WVU is "the winningest college football team to have never won a National Championship". You think you could do something about that?

We'll need an assist from fate.
a. The SEC and the NCAA whitewashed the Cam Newton invesgtigation. What a joke. One set of rules are in effect for Auburn. Another set of rules are in effect for USC. The majority around here seem ok with that, apparently. Just because its a big sh*t sandwich doesnt mean I have to pretend to like it. If Marcus Lattimore’s father had solicited money from Auburn boosters, but Marcus enrolled at USC, he would be suspended because (a) we’re not located in the state of Alabama; (b) our boosters don’t hold political sway in the corridors of power in Birmingham; and © we’re not in line to play for a national championship. That’s not bellyaching. That’s just stating undeniable facts.
If Mike Slive was willing to prostitute himself and our conference rules so openly and notoriously in the Cam Newton whitewash - just to make sure Cam gets to play in Glendale for big bucks - then I have little doubt the game officials have the official “word” from Birmingham …. i.e., their jobs depend on making sure the team from Alabama wins. Nothing blantant. An extra holding call here … an offensive pass interference call there … c’mon y’all, is that such a bad thing? One team is 12-0 and will bring $35m to the league, while the other is 9-3 and will be screwing our second best team (Arkansas) out of the Sugar Bowl. South Carolina should be content just getting to go to the game. If you think that money isnt talking, then you probably think this is still an amateur athletics.c. Nick Fairley is a brilliant player - and cheap shot artist. That’s not being an Auburn ‘hater’. That’s just simply stating facts. No sane person or sportsman can defend his misconduct during the Georgia game. He should have been suspended. But in Mike Slive’s SEC office, located just up the road from Auburn in Birmingham, suspensions are only for little programs like South Carolina. No team from Alabama need worry about them unless you’re stupid enough to throw a punch. Fairley knows that he won’t be ejected (see above) for anything he does. Watch to see if he tries to take Garcia out of the game. Why shouldn’t he? There will be no consequences. Both the SEC and Auburn have their eyes on the crystal football, and any and all means are legitimized.
Despite all that. I still think we’re going to win. And I dont “hate” Auburn and I don’t “hate” Cam Newton, but I do know even a blind man can see that Auburn gets preferential treatment that would make me ashamed to be a fan if the shoe was on the other foot. Really, this SEC Championship game is not Auburn vs. the World. but the SEC powers v. South Carolina. And if fate is on our side, then let bring ’em on.
I say Go, Fight, Win. I say Here’s a health Carolina, forever to Thee. I say Go Cocks..

I'm not going to get in a full-scale argument with you about this again...
But a couple of observations are in order.
1. The SEC’s credibility is on the line in this game. After what’s happened with Newton this week, if it appears that Auburn receives preferential treatment from the officials in this game, there will be consequences in national perception for the SEC. Slive has to be aware of this, and I don’t think he’d take the risk of trying to fix the game.
2. The NCAA does not have a direct monied interest in what happens in Glendale. This isn’t college basketball, where the NCAA directly makes money off the post-season. I think that makes it unlikely that the NCAA would obey Auburn / SEC’s dictates here.
3. My main response is that I’m just not quite enough of a conspiracy theorist to believe any of this. Is the SEC evil? Maybe. But evil is usually a bit more banal than you’re making it out to be. Maybe I’m just naive, though.
At any rate, I say we go out and whip Auburn’s ass and take home that trophy. The refs can’t screw us if we dominate.

Im not trying to argue with you but
1. The SEC’s credibility is already being questioned. Big 10 Commissioner Delaney and ACC Commissioner Swofford, not to be mention Mr. Clean new Southern Cal A.D. Pat Haden are all publicly denouncing the NCAA/SEC whitewash in that sort of diplomatic higher-ed pablum which sounds mild but is in context is quite scathing. NCAA President Emmert has had to publicly defend the “process” used in the Newton “investigation”. You can call it a conspiracy theory if you want, but you yourself have said partisan officiating is something youve wondered about.
2. You’ve totally forgotten the merchandising aspect. Which the NCAA does get a share of. If there other consideration was offered, who would know .. .the whole process was conducted entirely out of the media eye, in the space of three days. Why the secrecy? Who can condone that sort of thing? How would you ever know the fix was in? If no one confesses, then there’s no evidence … exactly the same thing as in l’affaire Newton.
3. I never used the word “evil”. Dishonorable, greedy, corrupt, secretive, Alabama-centric and favorites-oriented are much better descriptions of the SEC and Mike Slive.

Arkansas Fan here
If this were any other day, under any other circumstances, I’d be pulling for you guys.
Arkansas and South Carolina came into the league together, you guys are our permanent opponent in the East, always been a fan of both Holtz and Spurrier.
But with a BCS berth on the line for us, I gotta hope for an Auburn win - and I HATE Auburn.
If you guys pull it out and manage a win, I’ll be happy for you guys, but crushed that we came so close to the Sugar.
Awww. c'mon girl.

Excuse me if I’m not sorry if we win, though. :-)
