If you’re like me, you oftentimes have no idea what to get friends and family for Christmas. For those of you who are stuck in that boat, one idea might be a Gamecocks calendar from Asgard Press. Asgard has teamed up with Garnet and Black Attack to offer you calendars at a 10% discount.
These calendars feature archive-quality prints of actual game-day football program covers from Gamecock history. For example, looking at the cover of the 2013 edition (pictured), if you had gone to the Clemson-Carolina game back in 1924 and plunked down your quarter for a program, here's the artwork that was on the cover, complete for good measure with the saddest Tiger face you’ll ever see. What’s even better is that each image is perforated for easy removal and display in any 11"x14" frame! Basically, what you’re getting functions both as a 2013 calendar and a bunch of individual images that you can frame and put in in the room you watch the game in.
The program covers run from the aforementioned 1924 Clemson game to the 1968 game against Virginia. Several of the covers feature our former ACC foes (two feature N.C. State, two Duke, one Maryland, one UVA). There’s some Clemson in there, of course, along with a few that you might not expect, like Erskine and VMI. It’s an interesting look back into a time when we didn’t often play the teams that are now part of the SEC. The images also provide a nice survey of the visual advertising style of the mid-twentieth century, with styles ranging from the Rosie the Riveter-style drawings of the 1940s, to the minimalist cartoon-like images of the 1950s and early 60s, to the not-quite-psychedelic images of the late 60s. All in all, it’s a nice blast from the past, and certainly a bit more of a conversation starter than your average calendar.
