Will Muschamp has landed his second recruit of the weekend. Outside linebacker Sherrod Greene, from Rocky Mount (N.C.), committed to South Carolina this evening. Greene is the program’s 18th commitment for the class of 2017 and the tenth defensive player. He joins Damani Staley and JUCO transfer Eldridge Thompson as the team’s other OLB commits in the class.
Greene was initially prepared to make a decision in January. However, after visiting Muschamp’s Spurs Up cookout yesterday and speaking to the head coach, along with the assistants, he was comfortable enough to move that date all the way up to today and enter his senior season as a Gamecocks pledge.
247Sports ranks Greene as the country’s 20th-ranked OLB and the 10th-ranked player in the state of North Carolina. Alabama, N.C. State and Virginia Tech joined the Gamecocks in his top four, but South Carolina won out in the end for his services. As a junior, he recorded 154 tackles (106 solo), 11.0 TFLs, and 5.0 sacks. Will Muschamp will certainly be counting on a player like him to enhance the team’s pass rush when the rising senior steps on campus next year.
It’s the second commit in as many days for Muschamp. Yesterday, Clarke County (Ga.) safety Zay Brown officially announced his pledge, confirming his silent commitment from a month prior.
