Having one injured quarterback wasn’t enough for the football gods, apparently, and so a new name has joined the report this week as the South Carolina Gamecocks prepare to take on the Kentucky Wildcats under the lights tomorrow. Thankfully, everything else is status quo, but sheesh. Let former and oft-injured cornerback Akeem Auguste guide you through the list.
Zero Augustes - Full go!
One Augustes - Should play, but won’t start
Two Augustes - Game-time decision
Three Augustes - Questionable
Four Augustes - Unlikely
Five Augustes - Out
Dakereon Joyner — Five Augustes
The redshirt freshman quarterback has been dealing with a hamstring injury and is officially on the shelf for Kentucky. This is tough — not just because the Gamecocks like putting him on the field in different looks, but because he was backing up starter Ryan Hilinski. Jay Urich, the third-stringer who had been more or less moved to wide receiver, will now serve in that role. Everything’s fine!
Ryan Hilinski — Zero Augustes
I’m including Hilinski on here not to get anyone panicked, but to offer some reassurance via coach Will Muschamp. Hilinski was very obviously not 100 percent last week, operating with tendonitis in his elbow against Missouri, but Muschamp said his health is “outstanding” and he didn’t have any issues at practice this week. We love to hear it!
NOTE: Keir Thomas (ankle, headed toward a likely medical redshirt), Randrecous Davis (ankle, still scheduled for a post-bye week return), and Brad Johnson (groin) remain out.
