This is a big blow to an already-struggling Gamecocks team. For his part, Schmidt had a terrific campaign (4-2, 1.34 in nine starts), allowing just nine earned runs and striking out 70 in 60.1 innings pitched while holding opposing batters to a .194 average. We were already anxious to see if South Carolina could get on the right track down the stretch, but they'll have to do it without Schmidt.
