South Carolina (8-4) vs. Stetson (5-9)
Start time: 3 p.m.
TV: SEC Network+
Radio: 107.5 The Game
Fresh off their cathartic win against rival Clemson, the Gamecocks went and bagged themselves an even more impressive victory, this time upsetting the ninth-ranked and defending national champion Virginia Cavaliers 70-59 on the road. Jair Bolden had a coming out party for South Carolina, leading the way with 22 points, and three other Gamecocks hit double figures: A.J. Lawson (14), Justin Minaya (12), and Keyshawn Bryant (10). It was, in short, an extremely fun performance, and exactly the way you’d like to enter a holiday break.
What to watch for
Now that the Gamecocks are back on the court after two big wins, hopefully this means they’ve gotten the Head-Scratching Non-Conference Letdown energy well out of their system. The Hatters are mired in a four-game losing streak, and none of their five wins this season have come against anyone with a pulse. Rob Perry leads Stetson with 15.1 points per game, and fellow freshman Mahamadou Diawara was named the Atlantic Sun’s Newcomer of the Week earlier in December after averaging 15.5 points and 10.5 rebounds through the previous week’s action. This should be a good post-holiday tuneup for South Carolina.
