We’re close to the opener against NC State and to wrap up the Final Cockdown we’re looking down a list of potential impact defensive backs for South Carolina this season:
Chris Lammons + Jamarcus King | MJ Webb | DJ Smith | Steven Montac | Rashad Fenton | Jamyest Williams | Kaleb Chalmers | Tavyn Jackson | Keisean Nixon | Antoine Wilder + Chris Smith | Zay Brown + Javon Charleston | Jaylin Dickerson | Griffin Gentry | Hassan Belton
#28 Tavyn Jackson
Freshman / 5’10’’ / 174 / Tallahassee, Fla. / James Rickards
Will Muschamp certainly had a strong list of cornerbacks that have thrived under his systems - Teez Tabor and Vernon Hargreaves III among them. The hope is that Jackson, a Tallahassee product, is one of them. He’s certainly proven himself in high school: as a junior, he made 58 tackles and broke up 15 passes, following that up with a 76-tackle season as a senior with nine passes defended. It could be possible that Jackson could be a sleeper in that 2017 class. Unfortunately, a hamstring injury will sideline him for the first few weeks.
Recruitment: The three-star prospect was ranked among the top 100 corners in the country by 247Sports. He was on the verge of committing to Auburn last year before talking things over with his mother. Eventually, he would commit to South Carolina on June 17, 2016, sticking with his pledge despite a late push by Maryland that had him considering a flip.
