FOOTBALL

Football: All eyes on QB position | GoGamecocks
Joe Person runs through a few things that are both settled and unsettled before the season kicks off against Southern Miss. Settled? USC finally has some nice depth at the wide receiver position. Unsettled? Which quarterback will start the opener. If you think Garcia is a lock to start, not so fast my friend.

In three scrimmages, Shaw has combined to complete 30 of 42 passes for 396 yards and four touchdowns, with no interceptions. Garcia’s numbers: 21 of 38 for 265 yards and three touchdowns, with two interceptions.

Because the scrimmages have been closed, it is unclear whether Shaw has gotten most of his work against the first- or second-team defenses. Regardless, the son of a Georgia high school coach has held his own in his first preseason with the Gamecocks.

Seems Shaw's reps may have come, at least in part, against the 1st team defense. So there's that.

Alshon Jeffery comes in at #11 for wide receivers, but Wesley Saunders is surprisingly left off the tight ends list.

SOCCER

No. 12 South Carolina Blanks Northeastern, 3-0 | Gamecocks Online
Our women's soccer team seems to be picking up where they left off last year. Northeastern may not be a "name" school, but the Lady Gamecocks ended their home unbeaten streak. The Huskies had not lost at home since October 2008. Senior goalkeeper Mollie Patton also notched her second straight shutout of the season. That's two out of two for those of you not counting at home.

Coach Berson's teams haven't exactly been lighting it up in recent years. I hope this isn't an omen of things to come.

BETTER KNOW A MARKETER

One on One with Marcy Girton | The Post and Courier
An interview with Marcy Girton of the USC athletics department provides some insight into what they have done to sell football tickets this year. The scary thing about marketers is they know you better than you know yourself.
