Put those grins on your faces, Carolina fans. Today Steve Spurrier and his staff obtained verbal commitments from two of New Jersey's top prospects, three-star dual-threat QB Tanner McEvoy and four-star DB Sheldon Royster. These are both huge pickups. While McEvoy isn't getting a lot of national press, he's our QB recruit for the year. Word is, moreover, that he has tremendous upside; he only started playing QB this past year, and that means he likely has a lot of room to improve on his already considerable strong points. He's also a guy who appears to be perfectly fitted for our new zone-read offense. Royster, of course, is the nation's 11th highest-rated recruit at his position and is considered a bluechip prospect. Considering the problems we had in the secondary this past year, we can't have enough guys like him on the team.
This puts a nice finish on a week in which Carolina picked up commitments from high-school teammates TE Rory Anderson and OLB Marcquis Roberts, both of whom are three-star prospects and guys who play at positions of need.
G. A. Mangus, our Garden State connection, headed up the recruitment of McEvoy and Royster, and he deserves a lot of credit for successfully building inroads into a talent-rich region where one wouldn't expect Carolina to obtain many commitments. This guy has made a difference for the better for our program and deserves our accolades. High five, G. A. You are a pimp.
Now, if only we could figure out what to do with all these would-be Gamecocks...
