The Gamecocks fell behind early and couldn’t recover on Friday night.
Mississippi State scored one run in the first inning, then tacked on four more in the second, taking a 5-0 lead.
Starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt got into a groove and the MSU scoring slowed down for a while. South Carolina finally ended the shutout in the seventh inning, scoring four runs. Chris Cullen scored on a wild pitch for the first run, then Jacob Olson and LT Tolbert knocked RBI singles for the second and third runs. The Gamecocks’ final run of the night came on an RBI single from Jonah Bride.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs added three more runs in the ninth.
The teams will meet again on Saturday, with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
