The Gamecocks dropped a frustrating 76-67 result to Providence, despite a strong first half that staked South Carolina to an eight-point halftime lead. The Friars rebounded from their icy performance in the opening stanza, shooting 51 percent from the floor in the second half and going on a couple key runs that kept the Gamecocks safely out of reach. Once again, Maik Kostar and Chris Silva found themselves in foul trouble, and Silva in particular had a poor showing: six points — four from the free-throw line — and three rebounds.
Hassani Gravett led the Gamecocks in scoring for the second contest in a row, putting up 14 points, while T.J. Moss — in just his second game of action — had 12. Justin Minaya and A.J. Lawson each added 10; the freshman Lawson is averaging double-figures so far. Another bright side: South Carolina had 21 assists on 28 baskets.
What to watch for
This is the final game in the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Tip-Off tournament, and the Gamecocks will battle with the George Washington Colonials for third place in the event. The winless Colonials, hailing from the Atlantic-10, were previously bested 84-61 by Michigan, a Final Four squad from the previous season. D.J. Williams leads George Washington with 13.7 points per game and had 16 against the Wolverines. Hopefully the Gamecocks can salvage something here.
