Fresh off an upset victory of No. 10 Auburn, the Gamecocks kept the good vibes going with a 66-57 win against Georgia that completed a season sweep of the Bulldogs. Wes Myers and Chris Silva scored 15 points to lead South Carolina, while Frank Booker added 14 on 4-of-9 shooting from 3 as the Gamecocks sank a season-high 13 treys. Freshman big man Felipe Haase had a career night, scoring 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting with two 3-pointers.
What to watch for
In the teams’ previous meeting on Jan. 31, Mississippi State came out of a Columbia with an 81-76 win when a late Gamecocks rally fell short. Booker was the star of that one for South Carolina, scoring a career-high 25 points. The Gamecocks, just 2-5 on the road in SEC games this season, are currently tied for 10th in the conference.
Mississippi State is coming off back-to-back wins of its own, taking down rival Ole Miss (79-62) and Texas A&M (93-81). Quindarry Weatherspoon and his younger brother, Nick, who were a thorn in the Gamecocks’ collective side, continue to pace the Bulldogs with 14.8 and 11.2 points per game. Mississippi State sports an impressive 17-1 home record this season and is fighting to bolster its NCAA Tournament credentials in what has been a very deep SEC.
